Careers in Art

There are many career possibilities awaiting graduates with a Art History/Visual Arts Joint Major or a Visual Arts Minor. Many students choose to go on to graduate school, and this is highly recommended. The Emory Art History Department sponsors an annual careers forum. This is most helpful, as is Emory's Career Center.

Numerous internships are available to Visual Arts students, and these provide good employment experience in the student's area of interest. These internships include working for galleries, museums, arts centers, and arts publications.

Here is a small sampling of career opportunities:

Arts administration
Architecture
Art consulting
Art therapy
Conservation
Art journalism and criticism
Illustration
Art education, all levels
Visual artist - painter, sculptor, photographer, filmmaker

With a degree in Art History, there are even more possibilities for Visual Arts students.

Minors and Joint Majors in the Visual Arts Program have often continued on to graduate school in their chosen areas of studio art. Students have gone on to Harvard, Yale, and other fine schools throughout the world. Some have gone on to pursue highly successful careers as working artists or in arts-related fields. Our students are able to compete effectively anywhere they go.
