Gallery Floor Plan

The Visual Arts Gallery is Emory University’s center for the presentation of contemporary art. Approaching contemporary art as a cultural prism though which all manner of inquires pass—literary and historical, scientific and social scientific, ethical and spiritual—the gallery shows work by leading national and international artists. A courageous willingness to engage significant issues through art, an insistence on the value of diverse intelligences, an embrace of responsibility as it arises from responsiveness—these are the touchstones of the gallery’s mission within the university and the community.

Located adjacent to the university’s studio classrooms—and actively used as a vital element of liberal arts education at Emory—the gallery, designed by award-winning architects Menefee + Winer, is a versatile space of 1,100 square feet that exhibits five to seven contemporary art shows each year, including an annual student exhibition in April. To supplement its exhibitions, the gallery also presents outstanding lectures, panels, and screenings by prominent artists, curators, critics and scholars. Previous exhibitions and lectures have included Martha Rosler, Eve Andrée Laramée, Radcliffe Bailey, Alice Aycock, Pat Ward Williams, and Janine Antoni, among many others.

Gallery Submission Policy:
The Emory Visual Arts Gallery has an open submission policy. The Gallery Committee meets twice during the fall semseter, typically in September and November, and twice during the spring semester, typically in January and March, to review proposals.  The gallery's calendar is scheduled a minimum of one year in advance.

There are no formal guidelines for proposals.  A suggested format is a brief overview of the content of the exhibition and how the space will be utilized (see floorplan below), accompanied by the artist's CV and some visuals. Keep in mind that the submission will be passed around at a meeting, so proposals that are visually impressive and capture the committee's attention right away have the best chance.  CDs and DVDs are accepted (no slides please), but printed images are highly recommended.

The gallery has a track lighting system and a skylight. There are 4 optional moveable wall panels: both sides of each wall can be used, and each side has a useable space of approximately 100 inches wide x 88 inches tall.  To accommodate video installations, the space can be completely darkened by closing the swinging door and covering the skylight.
